Internationally renowned artists from Malaysia will be performing at the Rotorua Deepawali Festival 2011 at the Convention Centre this Saturday, October 1.

The festival will be inaugurated by Superintendent Wallace Haumaha, General Manager Maori Pacific and Ethnic Services, Police National Headquarters.

Samuel J Das (sitar) and Prakash Kandasamy (tabla) from Malaysia were originally invited by Multicultural Council of Wellington to perform at their festival in Wellington on 17 September 2011. This was in conjunction with ongoing world cup.

Since their arrival, these artists have performed in a number of concerts including the NZ Parliament Diwali celebration hosted by the Minister for Ethnic Affairs.

Wellington Mutamizh Sangam, a supporting organisation of Rotorua Deepawali Festival, is organising their trip to Rotorua and the artists are set to entertain the Rotorua audience on Saturday.

Hindu Council of New Zealand has been promoting inter-cultural exchanges in arts, culture and heritage. Celebrating Hindu festivals such as Deepawali and Holi on a wider community scale is part of sharing culture.

A number of pre-events were organised to promote the Rotorua Deepawali Festival. Workshops such as “Indian Art for Kids” and a Rangoli (traditional Hindu art) workshop for adults were held at the Rotorua Arts Village on 27 August 2011 and 17 September 2011, respectively. An essay-writing competition for young writers on the topic ‘Women Empowerment and Society” was held as well, for which the winners will be announced during the Festival on 1st October.

In association with the Rotorua Public Library, a display on the theme of Hindu culture was set up on 12 September 2011. The exhibition will continue at the Rotorua Library till 2 October 2011.

Mr Sailesh Patel, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand (Northern Region), said: “this year’s focus is Empowering Women, and Rotorua Deepawali Festival 2011 has been planned and organised by women. Young women diaspora from India, Nepal and Fiji, and from New Zealand are leading the organising committee.”

Last year, more than 4000 people from both Rotorua and out of town attended this unique smoke-free, alcohol-free and meat-free family event which is free and open to all. As in previous years, people will come from Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo, Tauranga, Whakatane, Taumarunui and Wellington.

“Rotorua Deepawali Festival is growing from strength to strength. More and more community groups are participating in the festival. Our aim of making it a role model community festival by 2015 is within reach,” said Dr Guna Magesan, General Secretary of the Hindu Council of New Zealand.

“In addition to the international artists participating this year, two representatives from Malaysian Hindu Sangam will visit us to study our festival organisation. This is a big success for our festival volunteers and the organising committee,” Dr Magesan added.

“All tickets for the evening cultural show have been booked out and more than 200 people are on the waiting list. We have requested some of the dance groups and the international artists to consider an extra performance during the day time so that people who have missed out the evening show tickets are not totally disappointed.

“In addition to the cultural performances, we have organised a number of workshops such as yoga for women’s health, Indian cooking, kite-making and arts for kids, meditation, contemporary dancing, saree tying etc. There will be food and commercial stalls selling vegetarian food, spices, clothing, jewellery, and handicrafts.”

The festival will finish with a spectacular fireworks show for the Rotorua public at 9.15pm.

Once again Hindu Council is organising Marae stay for people from outside Rotorua to allow them to experience and learn about Maori culture and tradition. A special powhiri has been organised at the Apumoana Marae for the out of town visitors.

Deepawali (Festival of Lights) is a well known Hindu festival celebrated all over the world. This year, the Rotorua Deepawali Festival (RDF 2011) will be celebrated on Saturday, 1 October 2011 at the Rotorua Convention Centre. Entry to the festival is free.

Rotorua Deepawali Festival has been celebrated successfully for the past 3 years. Each year, it has grown bigger, better and brighter. Last year, more than 4000 people from both Rotorua and out of town celebrated this unique smoke-free, alcohol-free and meat-free festival. People came from Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo, Tauranga, Whakatane, Taumarunui and Wellington.

“It is really heart-warming to see people from various cultures, nationalities, ethnic groups, faiths, and belonging to various organisations already booking tickets for this year’s festival,” said Dr Guna Magesan, festival coordinator.

“Deepawali in Rotorua has been unique in presenting the best of Hindu and Kiwi, particularly Maori, cultures, and we also aim to make it that way,” Dr Magesan added.

A measure of the popularity of the manner in which Deepawali is celebrated in Rotorua is that festival organisers from other cities have shown their keenness to participate and observe the uniqueness of this festival; and to see how this could be implemented in their respective cities.

Each year, RDF committee has added a novel feature in organising the Deepawali celebrations. In the first year, RDF was organised as a smoke-free, alcohol-free and meat-free festival, sending a strong message of healthy lifestyle to the community. In the second year, RDF gave importance to Hindu Maori whakawhanangatanga (kinship). Last year the focus was on youth development, guided by the vision to let the youth from Hindu and other communities to take the leadership in organising events that promote social harmony.

This year’s focus is Women Empowerment and the festival will be planned, and organised by women. Already, young women diaspora from India, Nepal and Fiji, and from New Zealand are part of the RDF11 organising committee. Participants from other countries are expected to join.

“A focus for the organising committee this year will be to send a nation wide message to all New Zealand communities on how women can exert a positive influence on society in leadership roles. We invite women from both Hindu and non-Hindu communities to take part in organising and promoting this festival,” Dr. Meeta Patel, Joint coordinator of the festival, said.

Last year, the festival was sponsored by a number of charitable organisations, supported by several government agencies, businesses and community organisations, and promoted by print and electronic media.

“With the focus on Women Empowerment this year, we expect more Government agencies to participate,” Dr Patel added.

Hindu Council of New Zealand (HCNZ) is a registered incorporated society based in Rotorua, and has obtained a charitable status from Charities Commission. HCNZ works towards promoting inter-community exchanges in arts, culture and heritage.

HCNZ has also been organising Marae stays for the Hindu community to allow them to experience and learn about Maori culture and tradition.

For the last three years, Hindu Council of New Zealand has raised funds for the success of the Rotorua Deepawali Festival, thanks to its track record in terms of community projects and its relationship with government agencies and non-government organizations and charitable funding bodies. This year also HCNZ will raise the required funds for the festival.

Appreciation for HCNZ and the work by its volunteers has come from individuals, community organisations and government agencies, for example, the Department of Internal Affairs published a front page article on Rotorua Deepawali in their newsletter ‘Community Matters’.

In his latest support letter, His Worship Mr Kevin Winters, the Mayor of Rotorua wrote “The Hindu Council continues to put a lot of time and effort into organising this event and plan an even more varied Festival this year with the help of their women”.

The Mayor adds “Over the past couple of years the Rotorua community has embraced the Deepawali Festival and thoroughly enjoyed the colour, food and entertainment that we have come to associate with the Festival”.

When HCNZ aims at a project for public good, it will carry it out with commitment, passion and sincerity.

“Our aim is to make Rotorua Deepawali Festival a role model community festival not only for Rotorua, but also to rest of New Zealand and the world, by 2015,” Dr Guna Magesan, said.

Involving local community, especially Maori community, in the festival has been noticed by community leaders and festival organisers in other countries in Europe and America.

We believe festival organisers in those countries have started planning to celebrate Deepawali with their indigenous communities; sometimes even in the face of obstacles created by organisations and individuals with motives to create conflict.

Rotorua public got the opportunity to celebrate Holi – the Festival of Colours – on Sunday, 20th March 2011.  Both children and adults enjoyed this festival; in particular playing with coloured powder and water which was the highlight of the festival.

This colourful festival, held at Rotorua Soundshell and Village Green, was organised by a committee comprising mainly of youths from various communities.  The key objectives of the Holi festival were to encourage youth participation, nurture leadership skills, and educate youths to organise festivals at a community level.

The official festival started at 11.00am with the lighting of the diya (lamp) and a karakia (prayer) by Kaumatua (Maori elder) Mr. Eru George.  Murali Magesan, one of the youths in the organising committee, welcomed the invited guests.  This was followed by speeches from His Worship Mr. Kevin Winters (the Mayor of Rotorua), and Mr. Todd McClay (Member of Parliament representing Rotorua).  Ms. Nitika Sharma representing Hindu Youth New Zealand invited Rotorua youth to the upcoming New Zealand Hindu Youth Conference to be held on 7-8 May 2011 at the Auckland University campus. Master of Ceremony for the opening ceremony was Dr Meeta Patel. Ms. Teilah Komene gave the vote of thanks.

The official welcome was followed by international cultural performances including Indian dances, traditional Chinese dances, belly dancing, Salsa, Zumba, singing and guitar performances.  Indoor games of musical chairs, charades, and a quiz on New Zealand were held thereafter.

The highlight of the festival was the blending of people from all communities and races as they sprinkled each other with coloured powder and water at the Village Green, to the sounds of Holi folk songs and drum beats that supplemented the high spirit of revelry. The mixing of colours signified the coming together of people from different communities and background regardless of their dharma, faiths, ethnic and personal differences in the community spirit of Holi.

The Rotorua Holi Festival was a smoke-free, alcohol-free and meat-free festival with free entry to the public. The organising committee, comprised of representatives from the Indian, Fijian and Maori communities, namely: Praneita Narayan, Valencia Herbert, Murali Magesan, Deepika Magesan, Gabriella Wright and Navneet Nair, with guidance from Dr. Meeta Patel and Dr. Guna Magesan.  Other volunteers included Tausese Lona, Teilah Komene, Pritika Sharma and Kirtesh Naicker from the Tokelauan, Maori and Fijian communities.

“Given the support this festival is receiving, it is not difficult to visualise the potential for the Holi Festival to become an annual youth festival in Rotorua” said Ms Praneita Narayan, the coordinator of this festival.

General Secretary of Hindu Council of New Zealand Dr Guna Magesan said it was good to see that youth from both Hindu Maori communities coming together to take Hindu-Maori relations (whakawhanaungatanga) a step further.

Hindu Council of New Zealand has always given importance for building whakawhanaungatanga not only in Rotorua but also in other cities. For example, the Second Wellington Region Hindu Conference will be organised at Arohanui ki te Tangata Marae (Waiwhetu Marae), Lower Hutt on Saturday, 9 April 2011, with Maori elder Mr. Te Rira Puketapu leading the ceremonies. The theme of the conference is “Hindu-Maori Perspectives on Holistic Health: from Individual and Whanau to Community”. The strong parallel between Hindu Dharma’s spirit of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam (world is one family) and the vision of Arohanui ki te Tangata (goodwill to all men) will be evident there.

‘Mehndi Moko’ – from humble beginnings to an international audience.Holi – the Hindu Festival of Colours – will be celebrated at Rotorua SoundShell (on Memorial Drive) and Village Green, Rotorua on Sunday, 20 March 2011.

As part of the festival, a ‘Mehndi Moko’ workshop will be held from 9.30 AM till 10.30 AM at the SoundShell for the benefit of the Rotorua public, in particular the arts community.

The workshop will include both Maori and Hindu designs and will be run by Gina Wright, a well known Maori artist.

Recently, Gina Wright was invited by the organisers of the 5^th Annual Henna Gathering (25-27 March 2011) at Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Gina has been requested to conduct two workshops on Mehndi Moko at the international gathering. It is the first time an artist from New Zealand has been invited for such a gathering.

Gina Wright said that the international demand for high quality Mehndi Moko has been overwhelming, and she feels privileged to represent Rotorua, Aotearoa on the international stage.

“By holding workshops and classes I have been able to promote this art form to a wider range of people sharing the many benefits of this contemporary adaptation of an ancient art form,” Ms Wright added.

“Despite lack of public funding the momentum of this art form continues to open markets and promote our culture on a scale unforeseen.

The concept of ‘Mehndi Moko’ was born in Rotorua in 2010 during the first Rotorua Holi Festival organised by the Hindu Council of New Zealand, with the blessings of elders at the Te Papaiouru Marae, Rotorua.Last year’s workshop not only brought together two art forms (Mehndi and Ta Moko) but also gave birth to a new phrase – Mehndi Moko.

“It is pleasing to know that an art form born of a cultural exchange here in Rotorua is receiving such recognition and appreciation internationally,” said Dr Magesan, General Secretary of Hindu Council of New Zealand.

Holi is a festival of fun accompanied by folk songs and dances. People celebrate it by covering each other with coloured powder, and drenching with coloured water, in a spirit of merry making. This colourful festival bridges social gaps and differences, bringing people and communities together.Last year, in addition to Rotorua public, international visitors from Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium, England, Canada and Brazil also participated in the festival.

One of the key objectives of this festival is to encourage youth to not only participate but to also learn to organise festivals at a community level. This Holi festival will be run by youths – mainly teenagers from various communities.  The committee comprises of the following: Praneita Narayan, Navneet Nair, Murali Magesan, Deepika Magesan, Valencia Herbert and Gabriella Wright with guidance from Dr Meeta Patel and Dr Guna Magesan.

Hindu Maori fusion at the Deepawali Festival captured the hearts of Rotorua public. From karakia to powhiri, from Haka to carving, from Mehndi Moko workshop to Poi demonstration – all happened at the Rotorua Deepawali Festival on Saturday, 2^nd October 2010 at the Energy Events Centre.

In addition, experience and understanding of Maori culture by Hindu community during their stay at the Apumoana Marae, Hindu-Maori fusion dance by Anujay school of Dance and Master of Ceremony by Shaloh Mitchell (Ngati Whakaue descent) were some of the highlights of Maori involvement in the festival.

The focus of Rotorua Deepawali Festival 2010 was youth participation and leadership. This year’s committee had young and upcoming Hindu and Maori leaders. The youngest member of the committee was only 16 years of age.

More than 4000 people from both Rotorua and out of town celebrated this unique smoke-free, alcohol-free and meat-free festival. People came from Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo, Tauranga, Whakatane, Taumarunui and Wellington.

Rotorua public have started recognising this Hindu festival as their own community festival. People from various cultures, nationalities, ethnic groups and faiths participated in this festival. For the first time, Rotorua Chinese community performed their traditional dances at the festival.

The Rotorua Deepawali Festival 2010 was officially opened by Todd McClay (Member of Parliament representing Rotorua) by lighting the lamp following a traditional Maori welcome performed by Ngati Whakaue. Sailesh Patel (Chairperson, Rotorua Deepawali Festival committee) welcomed the gathering at the opening ceremony. Best wishes messages were given by Dev Nadkarni (Editor in Chief, Indian Weekender), Pravin Patel (Patron, Hindu Elders Foundation), Stephen Jones (Coordinator, Friends of India Society) and Selva Ramasamy (Secretary, Wellington Muththamizh Sangam). The Master of Ceremony for the opening ceremony was Bhavisha Daya, and vote of thanks was given by Praneita Narayan, joint secretary of the festival committee.

Following the opening ceremony there were various workshops such as health benefits of Indian cooking spices, roti making demonstration, Maori cooking, Poi making, bollywood and belly dancing interactive workshops, and demonstrations of Surya Namaskar for yogathon. All the workshops were very popular. The food stalls were supported by local and out of town Indian restaurants. Many Rotorua public got to experience a variety of Indian vegetarian dishes.

A number of young women, led by Roshni Patel and Gina Wright, raised some funds with their Mehndi skills and donated the collection to Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation – one teacher schools (www.ekal.org).

Natanahira Te Pona and Tane Singh-Lagah, Rotorua’s Tohunga Whakairo (master carvers) had a Whakairo demonstration while Riria McDonald conducted Poi demonstration during the festival.

A special powhiri (traditional Maori welcome) was organised at Apumoana Marae for guests from other towns. Kaumatua John Marsh from Rotorua led the Hindu community during the powhiri and Pravin Patel, and Sridhara Mysore spoke on Hindu Elders behalf. Following this Maori welcome ceremony, participants shared dinner with the Maori Elders. The food was prepared by Savita Ben and her team of volunteers. This is the seventh year that Hindu Council of New Zealand had organised a Marae stay for the Indian community to learn, understand and experience Maori culture and customs.

A spectacular Indian cultural show was held at the Energy Events Centre from 6.30 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. Dr Meeta Patel, Festival Secretary and Central Secretary of Hindu Council of New Zealand, welcomed everyone on behalf of Rotorua Deepawali Festival committee. The cultural show started with a Maori dance performance by Mokoia Intermediate kapa haka group. Natraj School of Dance from Wellington, Anujay School of Dance, Nardhana Vidhyalaya, Padma’s school of classical dance, Indiance dance group and Prabasee Bengalee Association from Auckland, Rotorua Chinese Association, Bellyvegas community dance group and Soul of Punjab dance group from Rotorua performed a variety of classical and folk dances entertaining the audience. Rhythm House from Auckland put on a spectacular fashion parade exhibiting elegant Indian clothing. Ramandeep Kaur sang a melodious song. All committee members were introduced on stage and thanked for their hard work, and for providing a unique and breath-taking event to the Rotorua community. Navneeth Nair thanked all sponsors for having confidence in the festival committee by providing financial support. He also thanked all who helped the festival in various ways. Dr Guna Magesan, festival coordinator and General Secretary of Hindu Council of New Zealand, announced the dates for Rotorua Holi and Deepawali festivals, 2011. Shaloh Mitchell and Ms Nitika Sharma were the master of ceremonies for the cultural show.

After the cultural show, everyone walked in a procession led by fire dancers to the Government Gardens for the concluding fireworks display at 9.30 pm. Fire dances and drum beats by Samblasta group got the people in the procession dancing to the rhythm.

Donation boxes were set up at daytime event to raise funds for Christchurch earthquake victims. The trauma of the earthquake and the psychological aftermath experienced by victims is likely to last for weeks or even months.  The donations will be used towards organising free yoga and meditation classes by experienced teachers for the earthquake victims.  These techniques will help to calm the mind and assist the victims in their recovery process.
